How to start & grow an engaged Facebook group

Have you joined many Facebook Groups?

I'm finding myself spending more & more time in different groups.

Facebook is always recommending suggested groups to join depending on the group search history.
There are ton of Buy and Sell groups for local areas, book clubs, parenting groups which are all very nice and sociable – but how do groups relate to business?

Facebook Groups are all about growing a community – and you can use them to grow engagement with your Facebook Page by growing your brand online.

What is a Facebook Group?

Groups are meant to be a close circle of people who share & keep in touch on Facebook.

People tend to create the groups around things like:

  • A business (sort of like an "insider's club")

  • To offer courses & digital products

  • Books (think of it like a book club)

  • To sell items locally

  • Exclusive membership site

  • Support groups

Three types of Facebook Group –

  • Secret – Can only be seen by group members.

  • Closed – Can be seen by the public, but only members see posts, and members must be approved.

  • Public – Can be seen by the public, and anyone can join.

My personal recommendation is to create a closed group – you can accept new members into the group, and by keeping the posts to members only, this offers an incentive to join.

Creating a Facebook group for your business community gives you the opportunity to do the following –

  1. Serve your community – keeping in regular contact with your audience – members are more likely to see all of your group posts vs the organic reach on a Facebook page.

  2. Test your ideas – people love to be asked their opinion on your latest idea and are more likely to answer inside a group when they feel part of a community.

  3. Establish an authentic connection with your group members – whether you have a group of people from your own industry, or the group is made up of people who want to learn from your expertise – by having regular interaction with the members you can really strengthen your connection with them.

This guide serves as a basic tutorial on how to create a Facebook group, along with some tips on getting people to join your new group.

Follow these easy steps to create your own unique piece of Facebook real estate.

1.Pick a name.

Focus on a topic that you know a lot about and want to share.

This name can be whatever you want & you can change it later. But try to make the group name memorable & searchable - so people can find it.

2.Select privacy.

Emotional Body Mapping for the Mindful Modern Nomad is a private group which means anyone can find the group and see who’s in it, only members can see post.

3.Upload a photo.

Canva is a great platform to create graphics for social media. Keep in mind that most users are accessing the groups from their mobile devices, so be mindful of the text sizes.

4. Add a description.

As you grow your Facebook group, you will need to have guidelines.

Be very specific, as keyword searches will match anything you have written in this text box. You can also discuss the intention of the group and include a few rules along with the weekly promotion schedule (if allowed).

This is a great place to include your call to action and links to your website.

5. Add group members.

This is the section to manage the group members and grant admin & moderators with special access.

6.Create a pinned post.

This post will remain at the top of the group’s wall at all times.

7.Add description & tags.

This will give everyone a simple overview of what the group is about. The tags will make the group searchable by connecting to other similar groups.

8.Invite Prospective group members.

As a part of Facebook etiquette, it is always best to decide on 20-30 people that you want to invite, and then send them a private message to asking if they are interested in participating.

9.Ask Pending Members Questions.

Ask pending members some questions. They'll have up to 250 characters to answer each one, and only admins and moderators will see the answers.

10. Engage.

You need to engage with the members in order for the group to respond and grow. When you have an active group, more people want to join. One great way to provide structure is to have daily prompts.

For example:

Mindful Monday (Promo Day)

Transformative Tuesday

Work It Wednesday

Thoughtful Thursday

Favorite Friday

Shoutout Saturday

Now that you have created your Facebook group, it’s time to determine how people will find out about your group.  Running the Emotional Body Mapping for the Mindful Modern Nomad Facebook group has taught me a lot about how to manage and authentically grow a group, here’s how:

  • sharing the link to the group into my social media channels
